My NFL Week 16 Power Rankings
12.16.08
I predicted there would be a great shakeup in the Top 10 this week in the rankings. Too many of the top 15 teams played each other and teams are injured/sliding here at the end of the season. This is why you must love the NFL. The magnitude of every game from here into and through the playoffs -- attention is palpable.
As they are as you await my rankings.
So I will keep you waiting no longer.
1. Indianapolis Colts. I refuse to put PIT any higher than 4, because 1. IND beat them head to head. 2. NYG beat them head to head. 3. BAL would've beaten them without that bogus TD call and 4. they still have to play TEN. If they pull that off, then PIT goes here next week. Until then? No. The Colts are the hottest team in the NFL and NO ONE wants to play them right now.
2. Tennessee Titans. They weren't really "upset" last week. The Texans finally broke out of their early-season malaise in the past few weeks. Too bad it's too little, too late. I had them winning 11 this year and that wasn't a stretch analyzing their roster. The early-season stretch of three straight road games and not having Reliant Stadium fully available due to the hurricane really set them back. They are near the top of the NFL in scoring, mind you. But this is the Titans' block here. I say they're reeling. Kerry Collins is their QB. Time has come today.
3. New York Football Giants. Yes, we missed Burress last week and missed him AND Jacobs vs. Dallas. They aren't the only reason the Giants have lost two straight. But let's not get too hasty here. Carolina is not better than the Giants. If they beat us Sunday, then they are. Pittsburgh lost to us. No way you can put them ahead of us either.
4. Pittsburgh Steelers. Sure, they find ways to win, and it's not about style points, but I GUARANTEE all those points they leave on the field will come back to haunt them in the playoffs. It won't in the regular season. They're one of those teams where the bye in the playoffs may backfire as the team that plays them will potentially have two weeks to (semi) prepare for them. They can be figured out, especially if you have a good slot receiver.
5. Carolina Panthers. Until/IF they beat the Giants, how can you realistically put them any higher? Other than Eli Manning (of late) who has a shakier QB amongst the team with the best records in the NFL than Carolina? Steve Smith is arguably the best all-around WR in the NFL. The Black Cats have a two-headed rushing attack, but the Giants have proven that they can slow that down. Tony Romo (and Witten) effectively beat the Giants. Romo gets rid of the ball and (at least on Sunday Night) doesn't make mistakes. Jake does (7-27, 72 yards, 4 INT vs. OAKLAND???). Panther fans need to real in their enthusiasm and think on that for a while. The Panthers' defense, while solid, will struggle to get consistent pressure on Manning. They'd better hope that Jacobs misses the game. That's their real hope here.
6. Baltimore Ravens. ESPN had Dallas here??? How??? But anyway, this team might be better than their 9-5 record. They've had two games where the refs took the game from them (vs. TEN and Sunday vs. PIT). That would make them 11-3. Who, realistically, other than NYG, PIT and IND -- who all beat them -- can you say is better than them? Not Miami. Although they are not far behind in these rankings, as you will see.
7. Atlanta Falcons. They win pretty. They win ugly. With a rookie QB and a first-year starting RB putting up all-world numbers (Turner: 15 rushing TD) and Roddy White having the season of his life as well. I am looking good in fantasy due to these two guys.
8. Miami Dolphins. The Fish are going to win the AFC East.
9. Dallas Cowboys. Hard to put them any higher. Their backs are against the wall. They defeated a beat-up and DEAD Redskins team (which lost to CIN???) and caught the Giants missing their two top offensive weapons. Let's not get carried away. A TRUE barometer of the Cowboys will come Saturday night when (I am picking, anyway) they lose to BAL.
10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They're reeling. But I am not putting any of these other 9-5/8-6 teams ahead of them, either.
11. Minnesota Vikings. I can't justify putting them any higher. They have a shaky QB situation. Great backfield, and great defensive and offensive line. But if you are a bettor, would you take the Vikes on ANY spread right now?
12. New England Patriots. Yes, they beat the Raiders. But they are going to be the odd team out in the AFC East and the last wild card spot. The injuries have caught up to them.
13. New York Football Jets. Jets fans think the Jets are done. I think they have a way to get that last wild card spot. It's going to be tight. Gonna come down to Week 17 and the tiebreakers post-games. I think the Fish will win the division, but the Jets should beat Seattle and if they beat MIA (followed by the Patriots losing out) they will still get in.
14. Arizona Cardinals. That loss Sunday killed their chances to secure higher than a 3 spot in the playoffs. That is huge, because even though they'll be at home, their first game guarantees to be against a team they do not match up well against in Tampa Bay (most likely).
15. Philadelphia Eagles. They're still alive, somehow. No one would want to play them if they made the playoffs, either.
16. Chicago Bears. Yes, they're 8-6, but who fears these guys?
17. Denver Broncos. Ditto.
18. Houston Texans. They let me down, because I picked them to go far this year. Their last three games shows you why I had them winning 11. That win Sunday vs. TEN was NO "upset", either.
19. New Orleans Saints. They have slim hopes, still, but they basically need the Iggles, Cowboys, Tampa Bay and Fulcons to lose out. Is that really going to happen? That's what happens when you have an all-world QB, no running game and a perennially ABYSMAL defence.
20. Washington Redskins. You can call them the name that other NFC East teams' fans call them: DEADSKINS.
21. San Diego Chargers. Underachievers of the year. However, they can win out, have Denver lose out (including a loss to SD in Week 17) and still win their division. They'd have the 4 seed and likely land a rematch with the Colts. Honestly, with a clean slate, does anyone want to play this team in the playoffs when they're semi-healthy?
22. San Francisco 49ers. They will finish 7-9. They were dead in the water before they fired Nolan.
23. Buffalo Bills. JP Losman = YIKES.
24. Jacksonville Jaguars. They beat an equally dead team that has mailed it in (although they will check in to beat DET to finish the season).
25. Green Bay Packers. Yeah, what I said about JAX.
26. Cleveland Browns. Dear god. Romeo Crennel is a (word that rhymes with buckin') soldier like his injured starting tight end to stick in there with this menagerie.
27. Kansas City Chiefs. I keep telling myself they're not this bad. Maybe Carl Peterson's resignation (firing) will spark change.
28. Oakland Raiders. I was actually picking them to beat New England LOL
29. Seattle Seahawks. Just finish the season already, boys.
30. Cincinnati Bengals. Wow, they beat WARSHINGTON.
31. St. Louis Rams. Goodness gracious sakes alive they don't even have a pulse.
32. Detroit Lions. Good lord. They're going 0-16. No doubt about it. They have made their past couple of games interesting, but...

9 Lies Men Tell Themselves About Women
9 Lies Men Tell Themselves About Women
Julie Ferwerda
Crosswalk.com Contributing Writer
So you’re wondering … what does a woman know about what guys think? I just so happen to have some great male perspective for this article, namely from my insightful husband, Steve. But also, I used to be the woman in some of these points, so I also know how women play on men’s weaknesses.
Christian men and women in the dating world are met with so much wrong thinking in their relationships. It’s my hope to help you identify certain destructive lies in your thinking before it is too late.
LIE #1: She’s flirting with me because she thinks I’m great.
Truth: While it seems innocent and fun, flirting is not a behavior that women who are trying to attract the right kind of man indulge in. Most women who flirt are looking for attention, not just from one certain great guy, but from any who will give them the attention they crave. Why? Likely she either has a poor self-image and she’s searching for ego strokes, or she is desperately looking for approval that she didn’t receive from her father. The trouble is, flirtatious women often have a hard time leaving that trait behind when they get married, and they inappropriately (and dangerously) continue to search for the approval of men long after “I do.” Also, women who need this type of attention can tend to be high maintenance in relationships, always craving more attention.
LIE #2: She doesn’t realize what her revealing clothes are doing to me.
Truth: More likely than not, when she bought those clothes she was thinking about how you (and every other man) would drop his jaw when she walked by. While many women don’t realize the extent of men’s visual stimulation (since it’s quite different than women), most know exactly what they are doing to you. It’s called putting you under a spell to get what they want from you. Proverbs calls this a “seductress” with clear warning: “a seductress is a narrow well. She also lies in wait as for a victim, and increases the unfaithful among men.” Proverbs 23:27-28
LIE #3: Her lack of faith won’t pull me down.
Truth: Solomon, the wisest man and king who ever lived, fell for this lie. Believing he was smarter than God gave him credit for, he stubbornly ignored God’s warning not to marry the pagan women of other nations because they would turn his heart after their false gods. Sure enough, that’s exactly what happened—and it cost him greatly. In the end, he walked away from his faith. So if the wisest man who ever lived, the one who had been visited by God himself on two different occasions and who even built God’s temple, wasn’t strong enough to stay devoted to God while going after unbelieving women, how could you be any different?
LIE #4: She’s clingy, but I like to be needed. She’ll settle down once we’re married.
Truth: According to studies, men thrive on being needed, but this can backfire because many women out there are desperate to get married for the wrong reasons. A woman with “emotional gaps” will put expectations on you that you’ll never live up to, no matter how much time, love, or words of encouragement you give her, because she has mistaken you as the answer to her longings. After the wedding, you’ll disappoint her because you can’t do or be enough, and she may turn to other things for comfort—food, other men, alcohol, or shopping, to name a few. Depending on you occasionally for emotional support, or to help with certain things (like changing her oil or mowing her lawn) are great, but when it comes to emotional neediness, it’s a red flag and it’s not going to get better until she gets help.
LIE #5: If she knew who I really am, she wouldn’t want me.
Truth: This fear motivates men to tell women what they want to hear instead of being open and honest about who they really are. When this happens, the relationship is built on a lie, increasing the chance of relationship failure later on. It also increases a man’s anxiety over exposure and rejection, creating a cycle of deceit. The woman you’re dating deserves to know exactly who you are and what kind of person she’s agreeing to love. It’s not fair to give her false hope. As an example, going to church with her before you are married or pretending to be a spiritual leader, with no intention of continuing later, is not an honest representation of yourself. If she is a good match for you and she’s operating under grace, she’ll love and accept you, warts and all.
LIE #6: She wouldn’t just date me for financial reasons.
Truth: Think again. A woman’s greatest need is for security, according to studies. That doesn’t mean that all women are gold diggers, but you have to search out motives. There’s many a financially distraught woman thinking that getting married to someone financially stable will solve all of her problems, whether or not the man is right for her. Watch for a few factors. Does she manage her own money well? Is she stable financially on her own? Does she display expensive tastes out of her budget? Does she focus on her lack of finances or on your comfortable lifestyle? If you are concerned, be sure to approach this matter privately with a qualified pre-marriage counselor (her pastor?) for some objective help in discerning her motives. This may sound harsh, but you don’t want to risk marrying a woman who only loves your money.
LIE #7: When I marry her, my lust problem will be solved.
Truth: This is a frequent misconception for men who are waiting to have sex until marriage. They think, “When I’m able to have sex with my wife, I won’t be tempted by pornography or dwell on lustful thoughts anymore because I’ll have an outlet for my sexual energy.” I think honest men will tell you that marriage did not solve their lust problem. In some cases, it aggravated it. This is due primarily to the fact that lust isn’t a sex problem. It’s a heart problem. And just like a fire, when you begin to feed it, it gets hotter and hungrier, not satisfied. When a man gets married, he may be even more focused on sex and can still feed his lustful thoughts with images and fantasies. The only answer is to starve the fire of lust to make it eventually die down. Flee, as the Bible says, from sexual temptation.
Many men also go into marriage expecting their wife to be a sex goddess—ready for a romp 24/7. Relationship problems, low sex-drive, busy schedules, interruptions from kids, and physical problems can all contribute to marital sex not being as plentiful as you hoped.
LIE #8: She nags, but what woman doesn’t.
Truth: Frequent nagging is a control problem. If you want to be mothered for the rest of your life, then go ahead and accept the challenge. If not, either make sure she deals with her control problem before marriage, or move on until you meet up with a more relaxed woman who doesn’t need to micro-manage your life.
LIE #9: Her past is her past—I don’t need to know.
Truth: Wrong! Her past becomes your past. You need to dig during the dating relationship to see if there are any big issues lurking in the deep waters beneath the surface. What was her relationship like with her dad? Has she ever been sexually molested or abused? How have men treated her in past relationships? How has she treated men in the past? All of this you need to know now, or you could be shocked and deeply affected later when huge roadblocks and past skeletons emerge in her sexual or emotional intimacy.

The God That Gives Us Living Hope
The God That Gives Us Living Hope
Dr. John Barnett

Our Great and Mighty God has His Hand reaching down from Heaven to each of us. He says to us:
• I am your Creator (Isaiah 42:5).
God made you just like you are to do what no one else can do. You are my special, precious child. Trust Me, follow Me, worship Me. We need to from our spirits respond to Him as Creator by saying to Him:
I will trust You Lord; and I will follow You Lord; and I will worship You Lord.
• I am your Sustainer (Isaiah 42:6).
God wants to hold your hand and keep you. Trust Me enough to grab My Hand, and love Me enough to let Me shine through your life. We need to from our spirits respond to Him as Sustainer by saying to Him:
I want to by faith, from this moment forward, start reaching up each new day I live and hold onto Your Hand to show that I really do trust You; and I want to love You so that others see Your love in me.
• I am your Redeemer (Isaiah 42:7).
God bought and paid for with Christ's blood, a great price. Realize anew that you are not your own, you belong to Me. Decide anew that what you say, where you go, what you wear, and how you fill your time needs to bring honor to Me as your God. We need to from our spirits respond to Him as Redeemer by saying to Him:
Thank you for buying me, I am unworthy of Your love; and I belong to You so I want You to be pleased today with what I say, where I go, what I wear, and how I spend my priceless moments of life.
• I am your Revealer (Isaiah 42:9).
God has spoken in this Word you hold. He leads you through His Word, comforts and keeps you with His Word, and changes you into more usefulness only by His Word. He says, "Let My Word fill your mind and life". We need to from our spirits respond to Him as Revealer by saying to Him:
I want to get into Your Word today and spend time with You my Lord; and I want to feel your comfort; and I want to follow Your will for my life; and I want you to change me a little more to be like Jesus today than I was yesterday.
• I am your Leader (Isaiah 48:17c).
God has given to us the pathway we are to follow in life (Psalm 16:11); and He alone is the guide we can safely follow. The Lord wants to guide and keep us; and often, it is much more than we want to follow and trust. We need to from our spirits respond to Him as Leader by saying to Him:
I want to follow Your Path. I will submit to You as my Leader today. And when the path gets rough, or I begin to fear, I want to reach up again and take Your Hand stretched out to me.
• I am your Peace-Giver (Isaiah 48:17).
God has told us over and over that great peace belongs to all who will love and obey His Word (Psalm 119:165). He offers peace that flows like a river through every part of our lives; and He offers a cleansing wave of His grace across the beaches of our lives--so that we can walk on each new day of life with a fresh, new beginning. We need to from our spirits respond to Him as Peace-Giver by saying to Him:
I want Your peace every moment. Keep me in that perfect peace (Isaiah 26:3), and I will do my part-I will keep my mind focused on You. When I feel restless I will repent of whatever wickedness prompted that feeling, look back at You and thank you for Your river of peace, and waves of righteousness.

How Singles Can Stay Focused At Christmastime
How Singles Can Stay Focused At Christmastime

Once again the holiday season is upon us and many approach it with trepidation, uncertainty and disillusionment.
As we look around, we are frequently reminded of what we don’t have relationally and materially. Christmas movies, displays, and advertisements depict happy families with an abundance of “stuff.” For many, this is not the case.
The most important contributing factor to Christmas-related depression is disappointment. Too many expectations. Too much hope for magic that doesn’t deliver.
— Jerry Jenkins, author Left Behind
It is often difficult to stay focused on the true essence and meaning of Christmas amidst the commercial distractions that we face.
Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess (Hebrews 3:1).
I am determined this season to focus on those who had fixed their thoughts on Jesus that first Christmas—Joseph and Mary. Who were they? How did they feel as they approached the birth of Jesus? How can I learn from them?
Joseph
Joseph is one of the most recognized characters in the Bible, yet we know so little about the man whom God chose to rear his only son, Jesus.
He was described as being a righteous, just, and good man for not wanting to publicly disgrace his fiancée Mary at the news she was pregnant (Matthew 1:19). Joseph would have been justified to feel hurt, disappointed or confused (and he may have been), however we are only told he did not want to humiliate her, which is a credit to his strong character.
Joseph was obedient to an angel of the Lord who appeared to him in a dream telling him not to be afraid to wed Mary. He did not question the validity of his dream. He did not discount it as being insignificant. He did not look for an explanation.
When Joseph woke up, he did what the Lord’s angel had told him to do. Joseph took Mary as his wife (Matthew 1:24).
An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph three more times in Scripture (Matthew 2:13, 2:19, 2:22), directing him to take Mary and Jesus to another place in order to flee danger. Each time, Joseph obeyed without delay, debate, frustration or reservation.
Joseph’s strict observance to the traditions and customs of his period reinforced the kind of man Joseph was.
* He followed the Law of Moses by presenting Jesus to the Lord. (Luke 2:22)
* He offered sacrifices as the law of the Lord says. (Luke 2:24)
* He had done everything the law of the Lord commanded. (Luke 2:39)
* He observed the Passover Feast each year. (Luke 2:41)
Knowing these things about Joseph, we can deduce he was not only a pious man, but also a good father to Jesus. Joseph raised him in a godly way under godly principles and taught Jesus real-life skills like carpentry and fishing.
Joseph didn’t seem very different than someone you would meet at church. He loved Jesus and did everything in his earthly power to protect him. So why did God choose Joseph to help raise His Son? He knew Joseph would be obedient and his thoughts would be fixed on Jesus.
Mary
Besides Jesus, Mary is one of the most lauded people in the Bible. Little is known about her childhood or her family, other than she was of the tribe of Judah and had a relative, Elizabeth. Our first introduction to Mary came as she was a virgin engaged to be married to Joseph (Luke 1:27).
Gabriel appeared to her and said, “Greetings, favored woman! The Lord is with you.” Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean. “Don’t be frightened, Mary’,” the angel told her, “for God has decided to bless you!” (Luke 1:28-30).
Mary was reported to be a young teenager at the time and her reaction was probably similar to how many of us would have reacted—confused, disturbed or frightened.
We can often make the mistake of elevating those we read about in the Bible into someone who is unbelievable or even fictional. Not trying to discount who they were or what they accomplished, but I sometimes forget that they were real people, not much different that you or I. The difference is in the response to what God asks of us.
Gabriel disclosed to Mary, both she and Elizabeth would become pregnant.
Mary responded, “I am the Lord’s servant, and I am willing to accept whatever he wants. May everything you have said come true” (Luke 1:38).
Just as in the case of Joseph, Mary’s response was immediate obedience and acceptance. Mary’s faith was also undeniable, as noted by Elizabeth.
Elizabeth said, “You are blessed because you believed that what the Lord said to you would really happen” (Luke 1:45).
Joseph and Mary lived their lives in faith and obedience. It was not glamorous or extraordinary, however, what they were able to accomplish within their lifetime was extraordinary because they were willing to accept whatever God asked of them.
We all face challenges this Christmas season. It may be relationally, financially or physically. It is how we react to these challenges that determines who we are. Are we righteous, just and good in how we treat others? Are we being obedient to the Lord in loving and listening to Him? Are we fixing our thoughts and our minds on Jesus?
How is God speaking to you this Christmas? To rejoice in the blessings of the year even though rejoicing is the last thing you want to do? To reconcile with family members or friends even though you have been estranged for a number of years? To give of your time or resources even though it seems as if you have none to give?
Whatever God is asking you to do this Christmas pales in comparison to what was asked of a young couple thousands of years ago.
This Christmas, don’t hope for something magic to happen; put your hope, faith and thoughts upon Jesus. Joseph and Mary were ordinary people used in extraordinary ways. We too—even as singles!—can be used in a similar fashion, only if we listen and are obedient to the Lord.

Embrace The Season
Embrace The Season

Crosswalk.com Contributing Writer
I’ll never forget the day I was out shopping and my cell phone rang. It was my mother on the other end. I knew by the sound of her voice she had bad news. All I heard was, “He may not make it.” And unfortunately he didn’t.
As family and friends gathered together for the funeral, I was so happy to see cousins of mine whom I’d not seen in a while. Despite the fact that two of them had just started brand new jobs they interrupted their lives, jumped on a plane, and came hundreds of miles to be there just for us. As I finally got a chance to briefly talk to them, I asked, “When do you have to leave?” “In thirty minutes.” “You’ve got to be kidding!”—but no, it was true. With that short time, I wanted to spend every second I had with them, look them straight in the eyes, talk with them and find out how life was going with them. In every way possible, I wanted to embrace the moment.
It had been a long time since I felt such a strong desire to stop the clock. How quickly people come in and out of our lives. How short life can seem. And whether you’re married or single, there is still heartache and disappointment. Loved ones will come and go and, as much as most of us don’t want to admit it, we’re all getting older and will someday die. There’s something about funerals that slow us down and cause us to stop and examine ours lives. How are you living?
If you keep doing what you’re doing today, where will you be ten years from now? As singles, there is a tendency to put life on hold, waiting for that day you finally walk the aisle, when that ring goes on your finger, when you say, “I do.” Then, you think, life will truly begin.
Your desire to marry is very natural and normal. In many ways I believe God made us this way. But what are you doing today? Embrace every moment you have—now.
Life is full of wonderful and terrific opportunities beyond your wildest dreams. Don’t stop dreaming. Don’t stop seeking God for His divine appointments. Live life with moments that take your breath away. Don’t live your life “on hold.”
Stop and enjoy a beautiful sunset, the ocean, the mountains, the moon, the stars, a rainbow. Embrace the Creator of the universe. Embrace the beauty of His creation, His magnitude, His greatness, His love. Embrace life, knowing God has a plan even when you don’t always understand it or see it. Embrace His Word when life doesn’t make sense.
God says He has a plan, a plan to prosper you and not to harm you, a plan to give you a hope and a future. Call upon Him and pray. Seek Him with all your heart (Jeremiah 29:11-13). Don’t lose heart! Keep believing God no matter what disappointments come. Have you had another relationship fall apart? I understand. Press on!
When life is frustrating, He remains faithful. When you’re tired of waiting, He remains constant. When you’re sick and tired of being single, embrace your freedom.
* Exercise when you like.
* Go on a vacation when you like.
* Change the thermostat how you like.
* Invite friends over when you like.
* Watch the programs you like.
* Change the channels when you like.
* Spend your money how you like (according to God’s principles).
* Go to the movies you like (according to God’s standards).
* Eat the food you like. (Keep it healthy.)
* Dress the way you like. (Keep it wholesome.)
* Go to bed when you like. (Keeping it healthy.)
* Go to the church you like (by God’s direction).
* Work in the ministry you like (by God’s direction).
If you marry, the above list may dramatically change. Your freedom changes to a commitment to another. Your desire is to please your mate. Marriage would add a wonderful new set of things you may be able to do, but don’t forget the things you would lose.
Today can you embrace your singleness? Consider all the wonderful opportunities you’ve been given. Live it, love it, enjoy it, and embrace it!
May God fill you with His great joy! Embrace the moment!
“You will make known to me the path of life; in Your presence is fullness of joy; in Your right hand there are pleasures forever.”
—Psalm 16:11

NFL Week 15 Picks: Fire On The 1 Line Uptown Local - 30-45 Minute Wait Edition
NFL Week 15 Picks: Fire On The 1 Line Uptown Local - 30-45 Minute Wait Edition
M.D. Wright
12.10.08
As always, we have Thursday games, so I have to give you the picks early this week. I will be rolling out my spreads and over/unders beginning in the first round of the playoffs in January. Since I was able to get them out without rushing this time, they are aptly named.
Let's see...
New Orleans Saints vs. Chicago Bears
Soldier Field
Chicago, Illinois
The Saints are making a push right now. They've won two of three, both those wins at home. The NFC South teams are INDOMITABLE at home this season. Look it up. However, this game is on the road. With potential snow and definite gusty winds (The Windy City). The Bears are faltering badly. I am picking a "mild" upset here, because the Saints are desperate, while the Bears seem to be just idling.
Call:
New Orleans 27
Chicago 17
---
Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Atlanta Falcons
The Georgia Dome
Atlanta, Georgia
This is the ultimate pick 'em game. The Bucs got SHREDDED by the Panthers on "Monday Night Football". I haven't seen a running game give them problems like this since Barry Sanders -- everytime they played, basically. With Michael Turner and Jerrious Norwood, they aren't going to catch a break. The Bucs looked semi-explosive offensively at times on Monday, but I think the Falcons will win this one at home.
Call:
Tampa Bay 13
Atlanta 24
---
Washington Redskins vs. Cincinnati Bengals
Paul Brown Stadium
Cincinnati, Ohio
Warshington is reeling. Clinton Portis better get healthy ASAP for their sakes. They basically have to win out and still be hoping for the Cowboys, Saints, Eagles and Atlanta to falter. That's asking too much. Personally, regardless of Portis' status, they're not going to win 10, but this is one they are going to win. The Bengals aren't worth mentioning.
Call:
Washington 20
Cincinnati 6
---
Seattle Seahawks vs. St. Louis Rams
Edward Jones Dome
St. Louis, Missouri.
Please.
Call:
Seattle 9
St. Louis 6
---
San Francisco 49ers vs. Miami Dolphins
Dolphin Stadium
Miami, Florida
This is actually an intriguing game. The 49ers have been playing with spark of late. They ought to be wondering how they would have fared if Shaun Hill had played all season. Eh well, too late. Frank Gore's hurt also. Not sure about his status for this game, but it is very important against a very good Fins defense and More Wildcat. If ONLY for Gore's iffy status, I am picking Miami in this one (and to win the AFC East).
Call:
San Francisco 17
Miami 28
---
Buffalo Bills vs. New York Football Jets
Giants Stadium at the New Jersey Meadowlands
East Rutherford, New Jersey
Hmmm... are the Jets swooning? Or was it just a couple of bad games following FIVE great ones? Are the Bills swooning (as they have done every December this decade -- so YES) or are they just done? I think the Bills are done. The Jets may look good record-wise and control their own destiny, but their fans know this team and coach Eric Mangini does not inspire too much hope from them. However, the players play the game. This game is HUGE for the Jets' playoff hopes. Lose, and they are in some serious trouble, needing to win their last game of the season against Miami just to have a shot to make the playoffs. I pick the Jets here.
Call:
Buffalo 10
NY Jets 14
---
Detroit Lions vs. Indianapolis Colts
Lucas Oil Stadium
Indianapolis, Indiana
God bless Rod Marinelli.
Call:
Detroit 13
Indianapolis 38
---
San Diego Chargers vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Arrowhead Stadium
Kansas City, Missouri
The Chiefs are FEISTY. However, they're a few pieces short to be competitive every week. The Chargers need to win out and need the Broncos to lose out, as I said before -- to make the playoffs. I am going to play the "They Need To Win This Game, So They Will" card here and pick the Chargers. I have no basis for this, given how they played the first time (Herm Edwards "playing to win the game" and going for 2 at the end of the game, only to miss and the Chargers win as a result).

Tennessee Titans vs. Houston Texans
Reliant Stadium
Houston, Texas
UPSET ALERT. I don't care what the Titans have done since they lost to the Jets. The Texans are VERY GOOD at home and have one of the highest scoring offences in the NFL. Steve Slaton has been on a MISSION since he's been getting starting-level carries. The Titans aren't exactly worldbeaters against spread offenses. I am going to go with the Texans here.

Minnesota Vikings vs. Arizona Cardinals
University of Phoenix Stadium
Glendale, Arizona
BIG GAME. So many playoff implications here. The winner will likely wrap up the "3" seed in the NFC Playoffs. The Vikings' backfield is crazy. The Cards are athletic enough to slow them down, but I do not think they will stop them. The Vikings cannot stop the Cards' offence, either. This is going to come down to turnovers. I think the Cards' offensive line will keep Kurt's jersey white and I think they'll pull this off.

The Broncos' defense sucks and they don't travel well. Or, as Jaws likes to say, their defense isn't "portable". The Panthers do NOT lose at home (which is fine by me, because we play them at OUR HOME, not Charlotte in Week 16 hah). That's really simple. The Panthers' running game is going to carry them here.

Good lord I'm salivating over this. The Smashmouth Steelers' offense vs. the Ravens' great defense -- with ballhawk Ed Reed seemingly around every tipped pass, errant throw, fumble, etc. He's going to score in this game, by the way.
The Ravens' fledgling (and very good) offence vs. the Steeeeeeel Cuuuuuhtin defence. This is definitely going to be low-scoring. I don't remember what the O/U is for this game, but if it's anything higher than 30, take the under hah.

The Patriots are done, as far as playoffs go. God bless (seriously) Matt Cassel and his family. I can't imagine him playing focused football, even though he's from out there in Oakland. The Patriots' injuries are getting to be too much for them right now. I am leaning toward actually picking the Raiders here. The Raiders are actually a step or two above atrocious right now, which isn't saying much. However, their defence is VERY good. They make for good theatre with Nnamdi Asemougha campaigning to be this generation's Deion Sanders. But I'm going to go out on a limb and take them here.

*SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL*
This is going to be a bloodbath. The Giants are upset after losing to a bad team, the Cowboys were dealt a blow to their playoff hopes temporarily with a shocking last-second loss at PIT last week. Both teams will be hungry. Tons of injuries on both sides, but the Cowboys' defence is lacking in the secondary. The Giants' secondary is underrated.
Tony Romo did not play in the first game. He will need great protection, because Steve Spagnuolo will bring the pressure more than he has in the past few weeks. You cannot give Romo time with Owens, Witten and the emerging Martellus Bennett available. Marion Barber is iffy for this game. Jacobs will play, but he will not get the bulk of the carries (in my opinion). If Barber is not 100%(which I don't think he is) they are going to be lacking just a bit. It will be close. The Champs want the Black Cats off their tails with the Homefield Advantage Throughout at stake, still.

Call:

Washington Redskins vs. Cincinnati Bengals
Paul Brown Stadium

Warshington is reeling. Clinton Portis better get healthy ASAP for their sakes. They basically have to win out and still be hoping for the Cowboys, Saints, Eagles and Atlanta to falter. That's asking too much. Personally, regardless of Portis' status, they're not going to win 10, but this is one they are going to win. The Bengals aren't worth mentioning.

College Professors, Their Published Textbooks & Organized Crime

That's about what it amounts to, right?
When I initially began college out in Brooklyn back in 1997, books barely ran me $100 total -- and that included a Computer Programming book; which Computer Science majors know are notoriously and perennially the most expensive books out there.
I just spent over $1,000 in textbooks and supplemental readings/DVDs for my six classes in the Fall 2008 semester. I've attempted to sell all but one of those books back in the past few days. The grand total I've received:
$74.
GOOD. LORD.
It's not as if I have money to throw away, but land sakes, man I don't even think I used half those books. I know at least four of the sixteen I never even OPENED except to demonstrate to the UNCG Bookstore or Edward McKay's that it was in good shape. Heck, pages were still stuck together in some of them.
My two theory books from this semester ran me about $165. I got $26 by selling one of them back about six weeks ago. We never used it. We never referenced the book. We had three essays for that class and while I got an "A" in the class (of course), I wish I had known that I didn't need the books beforehand. The other book, which was $70 itself, is for some unexplained reason not being taken by UNCG, McKay's or Textbooks.com ($7.50 for a book I paid $70 for and is still in brand new condition???).
And let's not forget the typical "we're not taking this edition (nevermind it was just printed in early 2008) anymore" or "this is an older edition, we're not accepting this anymore" or "it's not even showing up in our system". What in the world...
Does anyone not see what's going on here?
Along with publishing standardized texts, (the people at Kaplan are making money hand over fist) publishing textbooks is the big thing these days. It used to be that a book was viable for 3-5 years, especially in a concrete discipline. I can understand certain subjects where new information becomes available almost daily and requires new printing every semester -- possibly. But HISTORY for instance... why is a new textbook required every semester? I bought three books for my US History class. I think I spent about $75 total on the three of them. I got $5 back for them. I am almost ashamed that I was trying to sell them when I couldn't even buy a friggin' combo at Wendy's with that.
So many professors are now getting their works published and requiring students to buy their texts. They get their university salaries (funded by ever-rising tuition costs -- exceeding $50,000/yr. at schools such as NYU) plus advances and royalties for their published books? Meanwhile, we buy these books, rarely if ever use them, then CAN'T sell them back, because no one cares about so and so's book; it's not widely accepted throughout the discipline, so there is no widespread demand for it. Goodness gracious sakes alive. Gag me with a spoon here.
This sounds like organized crime hah. You have to pay a portion of your take-home to the mob just to stay in business or you get your arms and legs broken or worse. The parallel with education is simply you don't get your education, fall behind and end up changing manhole covers and cursing at people who yell at you because you are holding up traffic on the Van Wyck. Is this where we are? It's definitely a racket. Heck, if it's legal and I can avoid RICO charges, I want in.
I'm almost scared to get married before I ever finish school. Being single is about the only way I'll be able to afford graduate/law school. LOL
BTW, why are so many states and the government claiming education is affordable? IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE OUT LOANS TO PAY FOR --ANYTHING-- IT IS NOT "AFFORDABLE". What is wrong with these capitalist pigs???
It's all good, though. Capitalism as we know it is on a high-speed track with no brakes heading for one of those wall barriers on I-66 heading toward Warshington, DC. You won't have to like or agree with Obama and his "share the wealth" (which I don't subscribe to -- I'm more of a Free Trade guy myself) because that's the only way any company is going to be viable by 2020.

Major League Baseball Hot Stove

Wow... the Hot Stove has really been turned up on Super High this week. For days, we've been hearing about Jake Peavy moving to the Cubs (not "close" if reports are to believed), Kerry Wood to the Indians (not done yet), tons of speculation about where Mark Teixiera may land (remain in Anaheim? Baltimore? Warshington?), but two moves this week may finally start the dominoes to fall.
Francisco Rodriguez to the New York Mets and C.C. Sabathia to the New York Yankees.
I am not going to play Peter Gammons and analyze everything about these guys and what the teams are supposedly going to do. I'm going to speak solely on how it affects the rest of the free agent market. Besides, the Mets have other glaring holes (especially their bullpen) and the Yankees are creaky and iffy in the outfield all around and still need another above average starting pitcher (or three, if Pettitte leaves).
Now that Sabathia comes in with 7 years and $161 million, where does that leave the rest of the pitchers?
AJ Burnett has been offered 5 years and $80M by the Braves. The Yankees have offered the same number of years and more money.
Derek Lowe has been rumored to be high on the Yankees' list. Nothing substantive as of yet. That may change now that the Sabathia Sweepstakes (who was really bidding against the Yankees? There wasn't a sweepstakes) are over.
Manny Ramirez still looms.
Where is Huston Street heading?
Indeed, where is Teixiera heading? Which coast?
Is Peavy really going to the Cubs?
Why are the Red Sox conspicuously quiet? You'd think things are going to change with that soon.
The Baseball Hot Stove is heating up tremendously at the Owners' Meetings. Things figure to pick up for the next 3-4 weeks and a flurry of moves should ensue. Attention will be palpable.

My NFL Week 15 Powre Rankings
My NFL Week 15 Powre Rankings
M.D. Wright
12.9.08
I don't care what you think.
1. Tennessee Titans. I put them here because they didn't stink last week. The Giants did.
2. New York Football Giants. They better stop the bleeding ASAP, because a loss to the Cowboys will have Serby, Schwartz and the rest all over them in the Post next week. Still better than CAR, TB, MIN, ARZ and DAL. Oh. And PHI.
3. Carolina Panthers. More than the 300 yard rushing performance split between D. Williams and J. Stewart (BTW, I'm sick of the "J. Stew" and "D. Will" crap -- come up with nicknames or use the government one, sheesh), the Panthers controlled this game start to finish. They're only mere steps from the Giants' level right now.
4. Indianapolis Colts. I am putting them ahead of PIT, because 1) they beat them head to head, 2) they're the hottest team in the NFL and 3) they're really not far behind TEN at all -- especially if they beat them in a couple of weeks. They will have surpassed them, IMO, despite W/L stats.
5. Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsbugg (as John Facenda, NFL Films, used to say it) controls their destiny and has the stingiest defense in the NFL. However, they seem to have a couple of fatal flaws that have not been exposed yet. I will not say "told you so" when the playoffs get here and they are exposed. However, for now, they appear to be World Beaters.
6. Baltimore Ravens. Good lord Ed Reed is a ball hawk. If you looked up what a Raven is in the dictionary, he's the epitome of what a real Raven bird does.
7. Arizona Cardinals. People can say what they want about their defense. It will probably be what kills them in the playoffs (if Kurt doesn't with sacks/INTs) but they are fun to watch and hard to stop.
8. Miami Dolphins. Yeah I said it. Another thing I'm saying? THEY WILL WIN THE AFC EAST.
9. Atlanta Falcons. The Fulcons have a pretty light sked the rest of the way. They could potentially be the road block to Dallas making the playoffs. Hence...
10. Dallas Cowboys. Dallas played very well defensively Sunday. However, PIT isn't exactly scoring 29.2 PPG like another team I know. Not having Marion Barber was likely the difference.
11. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I never have taken them seriously this year. Even harder to watch my boy Derrick Brooks look like one of my uncles trying to tackle the Panthers' RBs last night. Same for Ronde Barber making like the guy on the other end of John Heisman's stiffarm.
12. New York Football Jets. Two straight BAD losses and the December swoon is on. I think they'll win one of their last two, but that might land them outside of the playoff picture. For some Jets fans, that might mean the end of the Mangione Reign. Mike Tannenbaum brought him in, but how long can the Jets wallow in mediocrity with very good (and highly paid, I might add) players?
13. Minnesota Vikings. The Vikes are going to be dangerous from here on in, and a tough out in the playoffs.
14. Philadelphia Eagles. The Iggles were desperate, the Jints weren't. Let's not make more of it than it is.
15. Denver Broncos. They're Fool's Gold. If you are a bettor, stay away from them at ALL costs. Including Fantasy Football.
16. New England Patriots. Please.
17. New Orleans Saints. Two straight wins at home have them back in the hunt. They are huge Dallas fans from here on in.
18. Washington Redskins. The Jim Zorn Era is hitting a major bump in the road. Portis is wearing down like I thought he was (mind you, he's my boy, but I saw this coming) and Campbell looks like his thought process has retarded of late. Warshington is in trouble.
19. Chicago Bears. The Bears are done. I'm going to go ahead and say it now.
20. Houston Texans. Another strong finish to sucker in chumps like me into thinking they'll be 11-5 next year...
21. San Diego Chargers. Norv better hope and pray Merriman, Gates and Tomlinson are healthy next year -- for the ENTIRE year. He's gone next year for sure, if not. He may be gone after this season if they don't finish strong. A loss vs. Denver in Week 17 could can Norv.
22. San Francisco 49ers. They're about where I envisioned them as they progress under Singletary. They might win 8 or 9 next year.
23. Buffalo Bills. The Bills are done, too. They mailed it in two weeks ago, and definitely don't want to win; not giving the ball to Lynch more.
24. Green Bay Packers. Sakes, the bottom fell out quickly. As long as Rodgers continues getting points for my fantasy squad, I couldn't care less. I hate Green Bay.
25. Kansas City Chiefs. Mark my words, healthy and a couple of solid draft picks in 2009 and the Chiefs will be a 9 or 10 win team next year.
26. Cleveland Browns. What a waste of talent. Romeo's gone. Savage SHOULD BE following him.
27. Jacksonville Jaguars. Yikes. What a mess. How does Del Rio still have a job?
28. Oakland Raiders. I still think Russell sucks and I don't think McFadden will be anything more than a poor man's Curtis Martin, but without an offensive line, I can't draw those conclusions yet. Their defense is solid, but my eyes bleed watching their "offence".
29. Seattle Seahawks. This team is a muttled mess. Watch Mora win 10 games with them next year and get all the credit.
30. St. Louis Rams. The Rams suck. I would put them at the absolute bottom, because I can at least NAME one of the Lions' or Bengals' WRs. APBs for Torry Holt. His hairline is completely gone after these past two years. Is he Carolina bound? He probably wishes he was back in the Greensboro area.
31. Cincinnati Bengals. Buh-bye Marv!
32. Detroit Lions. (with JA accent) Lawd'amerrrrcy...

12.4.08
I have been STUPID busy this week, four papers down, three more to go, three study sessions and four finals in three days next week. I apologize if my picks go by like the NYSE crawl.
Thursday Night Game
Oakland Raiders vs. San Diego Chargers
Qualcomm Stadium
San Diego, California
*THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL*
The Raiders have shown flashes under Cable, but they've been extreme flashes. They beat Denver just two weeks ago, but that was sandwiched between two very bad losses (as Raider losses go). The Chargers can ONLY make the playoffs if Denver goes 1-2 or 0-3 in their next two games -- and then they beat Denver. Chargers win.
Call:
Oakland 6
San Diego 31
---
Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Chicago Bears
Soldier Field
Chicago, Illinois
The Jags are listless. They just got stomped by Houston, and coming off a short week. The Bears are wounded, and wounded Bears attack.
Call:
Jacksonville 13
Chicago 24
---
Minnesota Vikings vs. Detroit Lions
Ford Field
Detroit, Michigan
...
Well, I'll say this, the Lions score a few points to start the game. But that's it.
Call:
Minnesota 31
Detroit 14
---
Houston Texans vs. Green Bay Packers
Lambeau Field
Green Bay, Wisconsin
The Texans are going to surprise the Packers here. Their offense is scary. Their defense is emerging of late; with quite a few young players contributing. On the contrary, the Packers look tired. Rodgers has had a decent year, but teams are keying on Ryan Grant. This leads to more passes in coverage, as teams are also getting more pressure on Rodgers of late. He's had a number of backbreaking INTs lately. Matt Schaub is back for the Texans, as well. Rodgers puts up big numbers, but Mario Williams will, too.
Call:
Houston 34
Green Bay 23
---
Cleveland Browns vs. Tennessee Titans
LP Field
Nashville, Tennessee
The Browns have officially quit. The Titans are trying to wrap up the division, and a win here will get them within .5 game of doing just that. In other words, they're going to eat the Browns' children.
Call:
Cleveland 14
Tennessee 24
---
Cincinnati Bengals vs. Indianapolis Colts
Lucas Oil Stadium
Indianapolis, Indiana
The Colts are on a MISSION. The Bengals are done and only solidifying the fact that they're going to get Marv fired.
Call:
Cincinnati 13
Indianapolis 28
---
Atlanta Falcons vs. New Orleans Saints
The Louisiana Superdome
New Orleans, Louisiana
The Falcons are consistent on both sides of the ball. The Saints are not. Increasingly, they are becoming one-dimensional. All passing. They get none yards (as John Madden would say) from their running game. Add to that, their defense is putrid. The Falcons will be in Brees' face and the faces of his targets all day. It won't be a blowout, because the Saints won't stop coming at Atlanta, but it will be ugly if Brees throws those INTs he's been throwing.
Call:
Atlanta 37
New Orleans 24
---
Kansas City Chiefs vs. Denver Broncos
Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium
Denver, Colorado
This is my upset special of the week. I don't like Denver. At all. I am not impressed by their "wins" vs. Atlanta and the New York Football Jets. I'm impressed with how Oakland beat them. The Chiefs are feisty, man. I really don't know that the Broncos can stop Larry Johnson, and Tyler Thigpen is playing reasonably well. Unless the Cutler-Marshall/Cutler-Royal combos work, they don't convince me they are going to win. And I don't think they will do it.
Call:
Kansas City 26
Denver 24
---
Miami Dolphins vs. Buffalo Bills
Ralph Wilson Stadium
Orchard Park, New York
The Bills are done. The loss last week vs. San Francisco was the death knell. The Dolphins are on a push to go 3-1/4-0 and have a chance to still make the playoffs. The Bills fed Marshawn Lynch the ball (although STILL NOT ENOUGH -- 16, 17 touches? 134 yards) and still lost.
Call:
Miami 30
Buffalo 20
---
New York Football Jets vs. San Francisco 49ers
Candlestick Park
San Francisco, California
Watch out here if you are a degenerate. The Jets do NOT play well when they go west. Good lord they're awful. I still think they will win this game, but it is going to be ugly because 1) the Niners will muck it up 2) the Jets will be sluggish on both sides of the ball. I think they will pull it out, despite Mangini's silly play-calling at times.
Call:
NY Jets 17
San Francisco 13
---
Philadelphia Eagles vs. New York Football Giants
Giants Stadium at the New Jersey Meadowlands
East Rutherford, New Jersey
The Iggles aren't done yet. You have to hand it to them. They have no quit. Donovan F. McNabb has had a time this year dealing with the Philly media and their ridiculous fans. Westbrook, however, is not 100% and did not stand a chance of getting huge yards against this particular Giants defense even if he were. The Giants won't miss a beat without Burress (if at all) until the playoffs. The Iggles do not strike fear in anyone with their secondary. Because the Jints can run the ball at will, there won't be as much blitzing by Jim Johnson.
Side Note: for those unaware of how the Giants organization is run (as I tune out Gloom 'n' Doomers like Floyd Reese -- what the heck was all that hot air about the other night??? -- and Cris Collinsworth, who has been predicting the worst for everyone such as McNabb, coach Andy Reid and of late, Burress) you have to realize that the Giants are faithful to their players and give out second chances when they are jammed up. Contrary to all the sensationalist media reports, if you were to glean anything from the transaction of benching him for the remainder of the season and playoffs -- with his contract language -- you should see that the Giants are going to be patient and let the legal ramifications pan out before they do anything. They are not going to release Burress. You heard it here first. For one, they don't want to have to draft a WR, when Jerry Reese (GM of the Year) did a good job stocking that unit the past two years. And the NFL will, at most, hit Burress with a 4 game suspension to start 2009. If Adam Jones doesn't get lifetime banishment for what he did, Burress won't. And Puff got the same charge (with the same lawyer) in 1999/2000. He did no time, only probation. Same thing with Cam'ron. Probation, no time.
Call:
Philadelphia 13
NY Giants 34
---
New England Patriots vs. Seattle Seahawks
Qwest Field
Seattle, Washington
The Seabags are playing like My Father's Seabags. They're done. The Patriots will come back after getting smacked/exposed. Pats in a blowout.
Call:
New England 31
Seattle 9
---
St. Louis Rams vs. Arizona Cardinals
University of Phoenix Stadium
Glendale, Arizona
Kurt & The Boys are going to put up Greatest Show On Turf numbers in this one. The Rams are packed and ready to go to Hawaii.
Call:
St. Louis 6
Arizona 43
---
Dallas Cowboys vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
Heinz Field
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
*GAME OF THE WEEK*
Dallas has a lot to prove. Back to back weeks, they play the best defense in the NFL, and the best defense in the NFC. Tough task. They must win one or both of these games and keep pace with Atlanta; who has the better conference record and ownership of the last wild card seed right now. If they lose to PIT and NYG that puts them at 8-6 and doing a lot of scoreboard watching during Atlanta's games in Weeks 16 and 17. I don't know that I am picking them here, but we will see next week vs. NYG. Tony Romo is going to get smacked around much like he did in the NFC Divisional Playoff last year. If Marion Barber is not able to go all out, they're in serious trouble.
Call:
Dallas 20
Pittsburgh 24
---
Washington Redskins vs. Baltimore Ravens
M&T Bank Stadium
Baltimore, Maryland
*SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL*
On paper, this looks even. In reality, given how the two teams are on divergent paths of late, it's lopsided. I think everything will hold true to form over the past month or so and the Ravens will actually win this one similarly to the WASH/NYG game last week; going away. Too much consistency from Flacco, not enough from Campbell. Too much McClain/Rice. Portis is breaking down like a fine Acura with 415,000 miles on it. The Redskins' receivers are not getting separation out of their breaks. This will kill the Redskins' playoff hopes.
Call:
Washington 17
Baltimore 30
---
Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Carolina Panthers
Bank of America Stadium
Charlotte, North Carolina
*MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL*
*GAME OF THE WEEK, PT. II*
This is the one for all the chips. The Bucs win, they have sole possession of first place and the head-to-head tiebreaker over Carolina. If the Black Cats win, they have sole possession of first place and the tiebreaker due to better record vs. common opponents. I give the slight edge to the Cats here because they are undefeated at home, and don't want their Week 16 trek to East Rutherford to determine whether or not they make the playoffs (a loss in this game would put them in a potential three-way tie with Dallas and Atlanta). I think they will break the Bucs' back with their two-headed running game. Jake Delhomme will ensure they will be one and done even if they make the playoffs, however. Mark my words. He's been brutal the last half of the season.

I think they will pull it out, despite Mangini's silly play-calling at times.

Washington Redskins vs. Baltimore Ravens
M&T Bank Stadium

The Ship Be Sinkin'
The Ship Be Sinkin'
THE SHIP THAT SEEMED LIKE IT WOULD SINK
Regarding "little faith," it is also written:
Matthew 8:23-27
AND WHEN HE (Jesus) WAS ENTERED INTO A SHIP, HIS DISCIPLES FOLLOWED HIM. AND, BEHOLD, THERE AROSE A GREAT TEMPEST IN THE SEA, INSOMUCH THAT THE SHIP WAS COVERED WITH THE WAVES: BUT HE WAS ASLEEP. AND HIS DISCIPLES CAME TO HIM, AND AWOKE HIM, SAYING, LORD, SAVE US: WE PERISH. AND HE SAITH UNTO THEM, WHY ARE YE FEARFUL, O YE OF LITTLE FAITH? THEN HE AROSE, AND REBUKED THE WINDS AND THE SEA; AND THERE WAS A GREAT CALM. BUT THE MEN MARVELLED, SAYING, WHAT MANNER OF MAN IS THIS, THAT EVEN THE WINDS AND THE SEA OBEY HIM!
Luke 8:25
AND HE SAID UNTO THEM, WHERE IS YOUR FAITH? AND THEY BEING AFRAID WONDERED, SAYING ONE TO ANOTHER, WHAT MANNER OF MAN IS THIS! FOR HE COMMANDETH EVEN THE WINDS AND WATER, AND THEY OBEY HIM.
The disciples were afraid that their ship would sink because of the wind and waves. This is symbolic of the many things that the Christian go through or that come against the Christian. Sometimes these seem to cover the Christian, and it seems as if there is no hope. Here "little faith" is shown to be the same as doubting, because of fearfulness.
Jesus was in control all along. Their faith was being tested to see how they would react. No matter what difficulty or problem comes against a Christian, Jesus is in control and can rebuke the most difficult situations or problems, or provide a way to escape-ref 1 Corinthians 10:13. Sometimes it may be the Lord’s will that we go through a very difficult experience, but He promises to be with us in trouble-ref Psalm 66:11,12; Psalm 91:15; Isaiah 43:2.
Some in the boat appear to have had "little faith" while others may have had "no faith"-ref Mark 4:40.

He Said-She Said: Why Do Women Go for the "Bad Boys"?
Cliff Young & Laura MacCorkle
Crosswalk.com Contributing Writer & Senior Editor
EDITOR’S NOTE: Each He Said-She Said column features a question from a Crosswalk.com reader with responses from a male and female point of view. If you’ve got a question about anything related to singleness, please CLICK HERE to submit (selected questions will be posted anonymously).
QUESTION: I am 44 years old and have never been married. From my high school years and on, I've noticed one thing happening that I don't understand: Why do women today prefer the "bad boys" they know will mistreat them over the "good men" they know will treat them right?
HE SAID: By “bad boy” I am assuming you are referring to an overtly masculine, self-centered, arrogant male who generally forms relationships to purely satisfy his own physical needs. The type of guy other men hate, yet the ones some women seem to love? Is this close to what you are alluding to?
I have wondered this myself since I am never “bad” enough for those women, but “good” enough to listen as they struggle through their relationships with guys having these traits.
Every woman has her own specific wants, desires and needs. These differences lead to a number of reasons why some women prefer to date guys with an edgier side to them.
* She may see a Good Man as a friend, but a Bad Boy as real, exciting and confident.
* She may see an opportunity to utilize her natural desire to nurture or to fix a guy.
* She may be charmed (or manipulated) by his salesman-like skills.
* She may feel safer or more protected as he is less likely to be messed with.
* She may lack self-confidence and want to be controlled.
* She may want to experience someone less conservative and predictable.
* She may not be ready for a commitment (a Good Man sometimes represents).
Regardless of a woman’s ultimate motive (or motives) in choosing a “Bad Boy” over a “Good Man,” there is not much we, as “good” men or possible suitors, can do. We can sit back and wonder why, evaluate her for doing so, or try to understand her rationale; however, none of this is useful or productive.
Then again, if we are a friend or a close brother in Christ, we should encourage her to walk with God and seek godly relationships, not for our best interest, but for hers.
Preach the Word … correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction (2 Timothy 4:2).
I may not know the reason for or understand the actions of others. Likewise, I don’t know how God is going to use a situation in someone’s life in order to bring them closer to Him.
In some incidences, helping others out of trouble or giving them advice actually prolongs their circumstances by stunting their spiritual and personal growth. At other times, not being forthright with a person and not assisting a person through a situation allows the person to fall further away from God.
As a follower of Christ, my role is to always be in prayer for myself and for others so I can discern how and when I may be used in their life.
Whatever the case may be with the women you know, I understand the frustration in seeing them seek someone other than who you (and seemingly God) would want for them.
There is a passage in the Bible that helps me in quandaries like this.
When I thought deeply in order to understand this, it was painful for me, until I went into the sanctuary of God (Psalm 73:16-17).
If we have a relationship with Christ, we need to be spending our time loving God and loving others as ourselves. We shouldn’t desire to try to change who we are in order to win the heart of someone we are interested in.
I am doing my best to be who God created and called me to be. He has made me unique, special, precious and “good.” A person who is seeking a “Bad Boy” is probably not the one God has chosen for me or for you.
Take heart, and trust He who is God.
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13).
SHE SAID: Who knows? And I mean that with all sincerity.
Really and truly, why do men and women, bad boys and good girls, good boys and bad girls, do anything that we do when it comes to relating to the opposite sex? There are just some things in life that will never be explained. And a whole lot that is just not worth the time spent trying to decipher.
You can make yourself crazy if you try to figure out why someone likes one person and not another. Don’t try to make a pro’s and con’s list. Don’t try to reconstruct every conversation you’ve had with a certain individual who’s struck your fancy and is not interested in you. And don’t try to analyze all of this person’s moves and motives or get clues or information from their friends.
You cannot fully understand someone’s thoughts (unless they share them with you, and even then they still may not make sense). You won’t be able to understand what attracts him or her to one person and not to another. And if he or she is not interested, there’s not a whole lot you can do to change his or her mind anyway.
So, just know that in most cases, you’ll never understand. It’s best to just move on, accept it for what it is and tell yourself: This person is not interested in me, and I don’t know why. AND THAT’S OKAY. This person must not be God’s best for me. I choose to believe that there is someone else who is perfect for me and will see the value in me, and I won’t have to do backflips or tap dance to make something happen or garner interest.
In college, I remember trying to figure out why it seemed many of the cuter guys only asked out the plainer girls. I couldn’t decode the mystery. What did the plain-country-janes have that we duded-up city girls did not? After all, we had “cutting edge” outfits from Express and killer wits about us, and they only had long skirts, pullover sweaters and “boring” personalities (or so we assumed).
These young ladies definitely had a certain je ne sais quoi. And by that I mean, I really don’t know what in tarnation they had that we didn’t. Perhaps they had sweeter and gentler spirits. Possibly they were more at ease with themselves and not so focused on trying to impress. Or maybe they had a special talent for baking irresistible gingerbread. Who knows?
My friends and I weren’t setting out to be cruel in our thoughts regarding our female competition. We just wanted some explanations as to why the cute boys wouldn’t ask us out. What in the world did they see in these “plain” young ladies and not in us?
It’s the same line of questioning as your inquiry regarding women preferring “bad boys.” What do they have that the "good men" do not? It’s puzzling. And I don’t have a firm answer for you, because there might not be one.
However, when discussing your question with a friend of mine, she did suggest to me that perhaps a woman might go after a “bad boy” because she feels like she doesn’t deserve any better. Maybe she has a poor self-image and doesn’t think she could ever attract or hold the interest of a “good guy.” I think this rationale is definitely possible and could be part of the equation in many cases.
Also, what is considered a “bad boy”? Is he someone who many wrongly call a “player” just because he dates a lot and has a social outing lined up for every weekend? Is he someone who is comfortable in his skin, knows how to approach women and never seems ill at ease around the ladies?
Or … is he someone who is a wolf in sheep’s clothing? Does he act one way in front of his church friends and then carries on with a rougher crowd at other times? Is he a commitment-phobe who chases women until they’re hooked and then drops them like hot potatoes? Or is he someone who has a history of not treating women like ladies and getting them to compromise their standards?
Whichever he is, forget trying to define the “bad boy.” I think the real heart of the matter is that you’re trying to figure out why certain women are attracted to certain men, and maybe why certain women who you are interested in are not interested in you.
My heart-to-heart advice? Focus on being the best man you can be (be a Boaz!). Choose to always do what is right and honorable. Love and serve the Lord. Also, be kind and help others. That’s all you can do.
God knows what he’s doing in your life. His ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9), and so that means we won’t always (actually, most of the time we won’t!) understand what he is doing. Just keep that in mind and know that he knows far better what is best for us and our lives.
I highly doubt you have gone unnoticed all of these years by members of the opposite sex. While it’s possible you may have felt overlooked in years past by certain women you were attracted to, maybe it’s possible that you have looked over some wonderful young ladies who could have been or would be great matches for you (and were attracted to you!). Do a little personal inventory and think about that. It might yield a light-bulb moment.
It’s clichĂ©d, but I believe there is someone for everyone. And one of these days, the right woman will come along for you, and it will just work. I don’t know how or when. But hang in there, don’t give up and please don’t cross over to the dark side and become a “bad boy”—however you interpret one to be. Among other things, your character as a “good man” will surely be what attracts the one who is meant for you.

Gone With The Wind
Gone With The Wind
READ: Ecclesiastes 1:2-9,14
All is vanity and grasping for the wind. —Ecclesiastes 1:14
The epic film based on Margaret Mitchell’s novel Gone With the Wind opens with these lines:
“There was a land of Cavaliers and Cotton Fields called the Old South. Here in this pretty world, Gallantry took its last bow. . . . Look for it only in books, for it is no more than a dream remembered, a Civilization gone with the wind.”
Not only does a way of life disappear but also the dreams that drive the main characters. Throughout the Civil War, Scarlett O’Hara is preoccupied with her love for Ashley Wilkes. But by story’s end, she is disillusioned.
Solomon saw the futility of seeking satisfaction in people and things. Despite amassing wealth and knowledge, completing great projects, and marrying many wives, he said, “All is vanity and grasping for the wind” (Eccl. 1:14).
Why does chasing transitory things leave us unfulfilled? The biblical answer is that we were created to find our ultimate fulfillment in God. Jesus promised, “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).
People and things come and go. But the spiritual satisfaction Christ offers sustains us in this world and will endure into eternity. — Dennis Fisher
What comes from man will never last,
It’s here today, tomorrow past;
What comes from God will always be
The same for all eternity! —Spencer
